Penstemon (Penstemon spp.)
Family Scrophulariaceae
Since there are more than 36 species of Penstemon in Arizona, distinguishing them is difficult for amateurs. We saw these in March 2005 in Hot Springs Canyon. See the basal leaves below left, with the purplish stem, below right: Click on each image to enlarge it.

This species at left was photographed in Sierra Blanca Canyon Wash in March 2005.
It was growing out of a very steep slope of San Manuel Formation. At right, a closeup of the flowers. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)
